EDUCATION MODELS

"School-at-Home" Eclectic Homeschool Model

Since 1997, CIAS has utilized a unique eclectic "school-at-home" approach to the homeschool learning model at our Campus School. This include implementing an individualized education to each CIAS student, starting with an intake screening for grades K5-2 and a Diagnostic and Placement Assessment battery (DPA) for grades 3-12. • Math

  • ELA

  • Social Studies/History/Geography

Charlotte Mason Model

CIAS Campus School elementary classes utilize the Five in a Row curriculum for grades K5-3. FIAR is a Charlotte Mason method.

Charlotte Mason proposed that children should be given time to play, create, and be involved in real-life situations from which they can learn. Students of the FIAR Charlotte Mason method at CIAS take nature walks, go on field trips, participate in project or activity-based learning, and learn math, languages, literature, history, geography, and science from “living books," books that make these subjects come alive.

TEACHER TEAMS

The CIAS Campus School teachers teach in teacher teams. Our teacher teams consist of various combinations of teaching staff, including but not limited to the following partnerships:

  • 2 Co-Teachers (GENED + SPED)

  • 2 Co-Teachers (2 GENED)

  • Lead teacher + Co-Teacher

  • Lead Teacher + Co-Teacher + Teaching Assistant

  • Lead Teacher + Co-Teacher + Classroom Aide

  • Lead Teacher + Teaching Assistant

  • Lead teacher + 2 Teaching Assistants

  • Lead teacher + Teaching Assistant + Classroom Aide

CIAS utilizes a co-teaching teacher model at our Campus School to provide a balance between GENED and SPED/ESE student instruction and help support classroom management, behavior management, and RTI intervention (Tiers 1-3).

GRADE-LEVEL INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS

All GENED (neurotypical) and SPED/ESE (neurodivergent) students learn and work together in inclusive classrooms. Our grade levels are grouped into the 6 classes:

Early Elementary- K5-1st

Lower Elementary- 2-3rd

Upper Elementary- 4-5th

Middle School- 6-8th

High School- 9-12th (2 classes)

LOW TEACHER-STUDENT RATIOS

CIAS purposefully keeps our teacher-student ratios low so that our teachers are able to address the learning needs of all our students, providing small-group learning opportunities, activity-based learning, and one-on-one tutoring as needed. The lowest ratio is in early elementary: 1:6, and the highest ratio is in high school: 1:12.

SPECIAL EDUCATION/ESE/NEURODIVERGENT STUDENTS

Special education/ESE/neurodivergent students are integrated into regular general education classrooms and receive multiple levels of Response to Intervention (RTI), intervention with varying tiers of accommodations and modifications, maintaining academic rigor to target learning objectives and standards of learning (SOLs) in a least restrictive environment (LRE).

DIAGNOSTIC SCREENING & PLACEMENT ASSESSMENTS

All students who apply and are admitted to the CIAS Campus School complete a complete and thorough battery of intake screening and/or Diagnostic Placement Assessments (DPA's) in the following subjects and including but not limited to the following instruments:

These screening assessments and DPA's are then graded and evaluated, and the CIAS Principal meets with the Campus School teacher teams to prescribe an individualized curriculum plan. Then the teacher team sets up a Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) appointment to meet with parents of new students to review and explain the test results and discuss the individualized curriculum and learning plan.

CLASSES

CIAS offers various classes every school year for multiple grade levels. We believe that classroom learning is a valuable part of a well-rounded student's academic background. Our classes of approximately 8-22 students provide an ideal environment for students to safely learn and grow in their knowledge and understanding of academic subjects in a small classroom setting.

Here is a comprehensive list of all classes that we may offer to our students, as well as to the local homeschool community. For registration information, please email the school office.

NO BULLYING POLICY

www.stopbullying.gov

"Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose."

CIAS is a NO BULLY ZONE. This means that the staff works hard to advocate for and manitain a bully-free environment where our students feel safe. Our students sign a Student Conduct Code which states the following:

  • I will not tease with the intention of belittling or hurting another person’s feelings; I will not tease a person about unchangeable features.

  • I will not be mean; I will not say hurtful comments about anyone.

  • I will not gossip about teachers or other students, sowing discord and dissention.

  • I will not indulge in inappropriate touching or rough-housing, however innocent my intentions.

  • I will not fight with other students; I will not hit another person with the intent of hurting them

BIOLOGY DISSECTION LAB

CIAS hosts a seven-specimen Biology Dissection Lab every year, the first two Fridays of March every spring. Class size is limited to 24 students; call early to make reservations!  We use certified NASCO dissection specimens and dissect the following specimens:

Frog

Earthworm

Perch

Crayfish

Clam

Starfish

Embryo pig

Class fee: $50

Includes specimen kit.  A vocabulary & diagram study sheet is mailed out early in January to all students who are preregistered..

The state of Florida requires all high school students to complete science laboratory experiments as an integral part of their science education. Two substantial labs are required for scholarship applications.

CIAS provides VHS or DVD labs at our campus school for students who are using the ACE/School of Tomorrow curricula for the following courses: Biology, Physical Science, and Chemistry. Call the office to arrange a time to view them at the CIAS Campus. Labs are $10 per viewing of videos, and students may complete as many labs as they like at one time.
