Amy Carmichael was an single Irish missionary to India.  Her work with orphans, castaways, and temple prostitutes made her one of the foremost female missionaries in living history. Amy's life message was to be totally abandoned to the Lord Jesus, not to lead a life of ease, but to give her life for others.  Her many writings and thirty-five books inspire thousands still today, including her ever popular book, If.  One of the best biographies written about Amy is A Chance to Die-The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael by Elisabeth Elliot.

Of all my heroes and mentors, OC stands head and shoulders above them all.  When I was fourteen years old, my mom gave be my first copy of My Utmost for His Highest, that great compilation of OC's best teachings.  I have read it every year since; it never ceases to convict and speak to me year after year.  After enjoying it so much, I began to search for more OC titles, only to find that not very many were still in print.  I started collection first and second editions, bought over the internet from all over the world.  I even have a treasured autograph of Biddy in one of the books my sister Sarah brought me from London.  Now, Discovery House has reprinted most of his more known books, all transcribed by his wife Biddy throughout his Bible school teaching career.  Now available is also a volume of complete works...fabulous book!

Herry Verploegh and James Adair also compiled some of OC's best sayings and quotes as they relate to the Gospels and Epistles.  My favorite biographies are OC- Abandoned to God by David McCasland and OC- His Life and Work by Biddy Chambers.

In the 22 years between the time penniless Scottish immigrant Peter Marshall set foot on American soil in 1927 at the age of 24, and his untimely death in 1949, he became one of America's greatest preachers. During his short life, he was the Pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C., and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate.  Dr. Marshall was the subject of the book written posthumously by his wife, Catherine Marshall, and the subsequent movie, "A Man Called Peter."

I saw the movie on May 23, 1989 when I was fourteen years old.  I was so moved by the devotion of his life that I went back to my room, sat on my bed and dedicated my life to the Lord.  Though all the tears and heaving sobs, I gave my entire heart, soul, life, and future irrevocably into the hands of my God and Father.  I have never looked back.

Ever since Dr. Marshall had such a special part of this momentous event in my life, I have been fascinated by his teachings and sermons.  His preaching style, especially how he wrote his sermon notes, is intriguing and inspiring.  I have collected every book that was published and own several of the audio sermon tapes that were made available several years ago (thanks to my sis, Tricia, who bought them for me!).

A diving accident in 1967 left Joni a quadriplegic in a wheelchair, unable to use her hands. After a long and painful rehabilitation, she began to use her mouth to paint.  She wrote a book about her life, Joni, which was later dramatized in a movie.  Since then she started Joni and Friends, a  world-wide ministry to disabled people and their families, and has married Ken Tada.  She is a prolific writer; her books include the following:

Joni
All God's Children;
Friendship Unlimited;
Glorious Intruder;
Secret Strength;
A Quiet Place in a Crazy World;
Diamonds in the Dust
More Precious Than Silver
;
Holiness in Hidden Places; and
Extraordinary Faith.

Her newest book, When God Weeps: Why Our Sufferings Matter to the Almighty, answers the age-old issue...Why does God allow pain and suffering?

I love Joni's spirit.  I met her while working at a juvenile rehabilitation center, the Indianapolis Training Center in Indiana in 1996.  She spent a day during our initial training  period, answering myriads of questions and sharing with us about God's sovereignty in allowing mishaps and misfortunes.  I loved her before, but also admire her as the true woman of faith that she is!

I sat under the ministry of Pastor Richard Crisco for almost three years at Hearts Ablaze Student Ministries.  He is the ultimate romantic...how we all loved him!  He was one of the only non-ATI speakers that I have heard teach eloquently and rationally about courtship vs. dating without getting weird.  He always cut to the heart of an area that God was speaking to me about.  Sometimes, when I was crying under the Holy Spirit's conviction or maybe I was just too tired and worn out to even think, Bro. Richard would wrap his hands around the back of my head, put his forehead to mine, and pray over me whatever the Lord put into him.  Those were good days.  I missed him when he moved on; his sermons at the 2003 Branded by Fire Youth Conferences were once again inspiring and challenging.  I will always consider him my pastor.

Martin Luther has always been intriguing to me.  He was the great reformer whose thinking and searching for truth sparked the beginning of the Reformation, essentially the birth of the Protestant church.  October 31 is not only a horrific day in history; it is the momentous day that he youthfully nailed his Ninety-five Thesis to the door of Wittenburg Castle, proclaiming his dissent with the Catholic church's erronious practices and teachings.  Martin was crude, sarcastic, and bombastic in personality.  His marriage to Katherine von Bora was often humorous as it was intense.  I read his writings and find that I am wowed by his logic!
