On
Jane Austen & Being a Janeite
My favorite
book in all the world is Pride and Prejudice. Even after reading it over
and over, I never seem to tire of JA's humorous story about the five Bennet
sisters. Having three sisters of my own may have something to do with my
affinity for the witty tale of the woes and sorrows, joys and l
oves
of the sisters, especially that of Jane and Lizzie. I also
love
Persuasion, which is perhaps my second favorite book by JA.
"The Letter" written by Frederick Wentworth to Anne Elliot is the most
beautiful, heartfelt appeal of love that I have ever read. You

Anne
of Green Gables & All Things LMM
The "Anne"
books
first began in 1908 as a serial for a Sunday school paper. These stories quickly
became a favorite of readers throughout the world. Pat of
Silver Bush and its sequel, Mistress Pat, are my favorite of all
LMM's books, after the Anne series , of course! When reading the Anne of
Green Gables series as a twelve year old seventh grader, I fell in love with
Anne's kids in Rainbow Valley. Every since then, I have wanted to
have my own large, happy, and frolicsome family circle. I even have a dear
friend, Mary Kate, who is an addicted Anneite along with me, albeit she has
something in common with Anne that I do not...lovely red hair!

Little
Women & LMA
An Old Fashioned Girl is my
favorite of all the novels that Louisa May Alcott wrote.
I also love The Inheritance, which LMA wrote as a teenage girl and has
recently been filmed into a movie. And of course, any girl with sisters
can identify with one of the March girls in their escapades, joys, and triumphs
as girls growing up in Little Women!

George
MacDonald & the Wingfolders
I have read and love
George MacDonald books for many years now, especially after reading Michael
Phillips's revised editions. Since joining "The Wingfold"
several years ago, I have read many of GMD's original works published by
Johannesen Publishers. GMD was a master wordsmith and story teller,
writing Scottish and Gaelic tales during the Victorian era. His writings
irritate the sensibilities of many readers, since he can easily talk over one
head, so to speak. He also endeared his characters like no other male
author I have ever read has done. Who cannot read the stories of Malcolm
and Sir Gibbie and not love them? He wrote sermons, poetry,
fantasy, and novels...something for everyone.
His doctrine and theology was affected by his strict Victorian upbringing and
subsequent cruel treatment in the Anglican Church during later years; he became
universalistic in his view of God, as most graphically portrayed in The
Portent. I do not share GMD's views on this subject, however. I
believe that God has called all men to repentance, thus giving every person a
chance, during their lifetime on earth, to be saved and converted if He draws
them to Himself. There is but one death, and after that, the judgment; a
person may not repent for sin after death.
My Favorite GMD books are Sir
Gibbie, Malcolm,
and The Elect Lady.
"Love
is Home"
Love is the part, and Love is the whole;
Love is the robe, and Love is the pall;
Ruler of heart and brain and soul,
Love is the lord and the slave of all!
I thank Thee, Love, that Thou Lovest me;
I thank Thee more that I Love Thee.
Love is the rain, and Love is the air;
Love is the earth that holdeth fast;
Love is the root that is buried there,
Love is the open flower at last!
I thank Thee, Love all round about,
That the eyes of my Love are looking out
Love is the sun, and Love is the sea;
Love is the tide that comes and goes;
Flowing and flowing it comes to me;
Ebbing and ebbing to Thee it flows!
Oh my sun, and my wind, and tide!
My sea, and my shore, and all beside!
Faithful Creator, heart-longed-for Father,
Home of our heart-infolded brother,
Home to Thee all Thy glories gather--
All are Thy Love, and there is no other!
O Love-at-rest; we Loves that roam--
Home unto Thee, we are coming home!
